眼科医の数は医師全体の４％ぐらいを占めています。全体の医師数は他の科に比べて特に余っているとか、不足しているという状況ではありません。ただ、地域による偏在はあり、東北を中心とした地域が特に少ない傾向にあります。一方で、東京や大阪のような大都市は少し医師過剰になってきている傾向があります。また、眼科は他の科と比較しても、大学病院や市中病院を離れてクリニックを開業する医師が多いという特徴があります。特に昨今、男性は開業を目指す医師が増加傾向にあり、逆に勤務医は減少しています。また、女性医師の比率が4割、若い年代だと半数と、皮膚科、麻酔科に続いて女性が多い診療科でもあります。女性医師の場合は逆に勤務医が多く、勤務が長時間になる大学病院や市中病院よりもクリニックでの勤務を選ぶ傾向にあるようです。

ここからは少子高齢化、人口減少問題と絡めて話をします。当然ですが人口が減れば患者は減ります。しかも眼科の場合、皮膚科、歯科や美容外科と似たような傾向があります。それは診療所勤務の医師が病院勤務の医師より大変の多いということです。つまり診療所は人口減少で患者が減ることによる経営の打撃を大きく受けますので今後も皮膚科、歯科、眼科、美容外科などの診療所は経営危機もしくは倒産という憂き目を見る可能性が高いと思われます。
